Aluminium Windows vs uPVC Windows

Here at Klosen UK, we strive to offer customers a wide range of window options, that are not only bespoke in design but premium quality! That’s why we offer Aluminium Windows. Read our honest comparison of why we choose Aluminium over uPVC Windows.

So what is an Aluminium Window? And what is uPVC?

Aluminium windows (often referred to as slimline windows) are lightweight, strong, seamless and corrosion free due to the materials properties. Recently, aluminium based windows have become a contemporary choice for more and more people – due to its aesthetic benefit and window functionality.

uPVC windows are fully known as unplasticised PolyVinyl Chloride. This type of window has been utilised since 1980 and has been a popular choice with homeowners – due to being a cheaper option and easy to maintain via its thick frames.

Aesthetics

In terms of aesthetics, there is one clear winner for us. Aluminium Windows are frequently seen on grand designs, and since the 21 century has been the go-to choice for architects designing window frames – in both new and old homes! Whereas aesthetic prowess is the unfortunate downfall of uPVC. Although this type of window is more common, this can be deemed as plain and a little boring, due to its thick frames and minimized glass panes – hence why grand designs love aluminium windows!

Insulation Performance & Life Span

“Windows are responsible for 23% – 36% of all heat loss in a home” (National Fund of Environmental Protection, 2018). There is a common myth that seems to be repeated over and over again concerning the insulation performance of Aluminium and uPVC. With the above quote, it is inevitable that windows are always going to partially impact for energy efficiency. However, all windows have to pass regulation to ensure energy efficiency compliance.

Developments in thermal technology mean that aluminium windows and doors are among the best-insulated on the market (whereas uPVC has the ability to expand and contract depending on weather). That’s why at Klosen UK, we only deal with our registered and leading suppliers Cortizo, Aluprof and Senior Architectural Systems – because all comply with the highest of energy efficiency!

As standard, all of the aluminium profiles that we supply and install are guaranteed by ourselves for 10 years, with the powder coating element being guaranteed for an increased 25 years against corrosion. Typically speaking, uPVC parts are only guaranteed for 10 years – which does not cover fading or discolouration; meaning Aluminum is the clear winner here for life span.

Cost

Finally, let’s address the elephant in the room! The upfront price of aluminium windows is going to be more expensive than uPVC. This is because the cost of aluminium materials are considered as premium, although aluminium is a great insulator and is less likely to degrade than uPVC. uPVC windows are a more affordable alternative, however when we weigh up the life span, it is much more cost effective in the long run to opt for an aluminium window – why not try a free no obligation quote and find out more?

Overall

Both windows provide there benefits and drawbacks. In terms of insulation performance, due to regulations maintained by the Government, aluminium or uPVC windows will ensure excellent insulation. However, we believe that Aluminium Windows are a more cost-effective solution long term, due to its free from corrosion and expansion properties and is far more aesthetically pleasing!
